Week 8-Goals and Gratitude

A goal that I have related to working with children and families from diverse backgrounds is that I would always remember that, in spite of any differences related to color, creed, ideology, and culture, we are all the same and want the same things from life, for ourselves, our children and the world. We all wish for freedom, peace, a good and purposeful life for ourselves and our children, love and to belong.

A goal that I hold for the field of Early Childhood Education related to issues of diversity, equity and social justice is that Anti-Bias Education become cemented as a standard model for Early Childhood Education. I think that, if children are educated according to the anti-bias model, recognizing and appreciating diversity will become a way of life.

To My Colleagues:

Thank you for sharing your opinions, points of view, knowledge and experience with me. Thank you for challenging my thinking with your questions and feedback. Thank you for taking this journey with me. You provide inspiration and your tenacity is admirable. Best wishes to all of you!

  1. I also agree that if we begin to teach children at a very early age about the importance of diversity, it will become instilled in their way of life and as they continue to mature and grow, diversity (acceptance, tolerance and respect) will just be another part of life that comes natural to everyone. I wish you the best of luck in the future and with the remained of your courses! I have enjoyed learning more about you and your culture!

  2. Thanks Careyann. It would be great if we could meet people as potential partners rather that thoughts of competition and exploitation. And we as early childhood educators is the place that a difference can begin to happen. This is more that just a nice idea it is the basis of a successful future. Thanks for all you have given to this course. Good luck

  3. Hi Careyann,

I enjoyed your post and I agree with you 100%. We all know that the critical stages of development with children begin at a very early age from birth to five years. If we teach love, respect, and appreciation for our similarities and differences we can make a difference in their lives. I am glad to know that we first begin this lesson with ourselves so that we understand and can teach it to our students. "By preschool age, children begin to absorb stereotypes and attitudes about other ethnic/cultural groups from their family and the larger society" (Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010, p. 59).

I have enjoyed your openness in the class and sharing your knowledge with myself as well as our colleagues. Good luck and much success!!

  4. Careyann,
Thank you for all of your insight throughout this course. I feel that I have learned a great deal from you. I agree with your goals for yourself and early childhood. The better people we become, and the more time we take to educate our children and students about the beauty in diversity, the more positive future generations will be, and the better opportunity we will have to acheive peace. Wonderful post, and good luck to you in all you do!
